Lufthansa and Germany’s VC pilots’ union are stuck. Both sides say they’re open to arbitration, but neither can agree on the terms to get there.
The dispute escalated on Wednesday when VC announced that Lufthansa had rejected its offer to enter arbitration in the ongoing labor conflict. The union, which has already threatened strike action, accused the airline of attaching far-reaching demands that go beyond the current disagreements.
Lufthansa pushed back, saying it remains willing to negotiate. But the gap between the two positions suggests a resolution isn’t coming anytime soon.
What’s blocking a deal
The core issue is scope. VC offered arbitration focused on the outstanding labor disputes at Lufthansa’s main brand and its cargo subsidiary. Straightforward enough.
Lufthansa, however, wants a much broader process. The airline is pushing to include not just the current disputes, but also existing contracts — some of which have long remaining terms. That means retirement benefits, transitional benefits, compensation, and working conditions would all be on the table.
VC representative Andreas Pinheiro said that approach effectively calls established agreements into question. From the union’s perspective, Lufthansa isn’t just seeking arbitration — it’s trying to rewrite the rules.
A Lufthansa spokesperson framed it differently. “For a fresh start, all our major collective bargaining issues must be included in arbitration,” the airline said in a statement. The company called it necessary to address the full picture at once.
Strike threat still looms
With arbitration stalled, the threat of pilot strikes remains very real. VC has already signaled its willingness to escalate. On Wednesday, passengers at Frankfurt Airport were already facing disruptions — though those were tied to a separate strike by the UFO cabin crew union.
If the deadlock persists, Lufthansa could face pressure on multiple fronts: pilots unhappy with contract terms and cabin crew already walking off the job. For an airline navigating a challenging economic environment, prolonged labor unrest is the last thing it needs.
